About Dare to Suck.com
Dare
To have the courage to put forward, as an idea, especially when rebuff or criticism is likely.
To confront or oppose boldly
"I never dare to write
As funny as I can"
- Oliver Wendell Holmes
DareToSuck is not "Try to Suck" or "Aspire to Suck," but rather a challenge to try and possibly fail -- to take risks. To dare -- and maybe fall flat on your face, with a community of friends to say "Hey, that sucked! But nice try!"
"What man dare, I dare:
Approach thou like the rugged Russian bear,
The arm'd rhinoceros, or the Hyrcan tiger,-
Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves
Shall never tremble."
- Macbeth, Act iii. Sc. 4
Dare to Suck is not a lowering of the bar. It is a raising of the bar. It means trying something that is very likely outside your grasp, yet being willing to do it in front of an audience anyway. Theatre of Ted is a uniquely appropriate format to Dare.
Never had the guts to sing in front of an audience or audition for a musical? Theatre of Ted is where you Dare. You may suck, but at least you'll have the experience and may gain the courage to do it again - perhaps in other venues.
Dare to Suck is pushing the envelope.
Dare to Suck means doing something you never thought you'd be able to do. And when you do (even if you suck), other tasks (like facing the Acting Faculty with your Albee monologue) seem less threatening.
Dare to Suck is about gaining confidence as a performer.
"I can suck melancholy
out of a song
as a weasel sucks eggs.
More! I prithee, more."
- As You Like It,
Act ii. Sc. 5
